Long before he built a school, he was the traveler crossing borders with a simple goal: to learn languages, live like a local, and experience culture in a way that actually meant something. That search, and everything that got in the way of it, is what eventually became Instituto Hemingway.
From Traveler to Founder
Jose started out doing what a lot of curious people do. He went abroad to learn languages and immerse himself in new cultures.
But the experience rarely matched the hope. Everywhere he went, he ran into the same friction: layers of regulations, questions no one seemed able to answer, and programs that felt cold and impersonal. He wanted to connect with a place and its people. What he got instead was paperwork and distance.
Somewhere in that gap between what he wanted and what existed, an idea took shape. If no one was teaching languages the way he wished they would, he could build it himself.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Jose founded Instituto Hemingway around a belief that still guides the school today: learning a language should go far beyond the classroom.
For him, it should be personal and immersive, an experience that lets people truly connect with the culture, build real relationships, and feel at home in a new place. So he built the school around people rather than packages. Every student who arrives has their own story, goals, and expectations, and the team works to support each of them in a close, human way.
