Volunt2Thai did not begin with a business plan. It began with an experience Raimund Wagner could not forget.
More than 25 years ago, the Austrian traveler arrived in Thailand expecting only a stop along the way. Instead, Bangkok introduced him to two very different realities: a fast-growing international city and communities where poverty and limited access to education could shape a person’s future before they had much say in it.
Years later, those experiences would lead Raimund to Northeast Thailand and eventually to the creation of Volunt2Thai.
Finding Purpose in Northeast Thailand
Raimund originally planned to travel to Australia after finishing his education, but life took him to Bangkok instead.
He learned Thai and began working as an interpreter for international companies. Outside of work, however, he spent time getting to know families living in some of Bangkok’s poorest neighborhoods.
As he listened to their stories, a pattern became clear. Many families had roots in Isaan, Thailand’s northeast region. Parents often left their villages to find work in Bangkok, while children remained with grandparents. For young people growing up with few educational or economic opportunities, the choices available to them could be limited.
The experience stayed with Raimund.
Years later, while visiting his wife’s village in Northeast Thailand, he saw many of the same challenges from another side: children growing up without their parents nearby, grandparents carrying the responsibility of raising families, and limited opportunities for young people after compulsory schooling.
Then the local mayor asked him a simple question:
“Can you do something to improve the situation here?”
That question became the beginning of Volunt2Thai.
Building Opportunity Through Community
In 2013, Raimund and his family started Volunt2Thai as a small private initiative.
There were no investors or guarantees. Raimund and his family used their own savings and resources to begin building something around one goal: creating better opportunities for children in Northeast Thailand.
At first, even finding volunteers was difficult. The team spent months reaching out through social media and personal connections before the first participants began arriving.
Those volunteers were never meant to simply pass through the village.
They taught English in local schools, organized creative activities, played sports with children, shared meals with families, learned about Thai culture, and became part of everyday community life.
Over time, the project grew.
Today, the Volunt2Thai Campus & Cultural Centre brings together international volunteers, students, families, schools, teachers, universities, local authorities, and community members. Programs now extend across education, cultural exchange, internships, sports, arts, environmental projects, sustainable gardening, and other community initiatives.
But the purpose behind that growth has remained the same.

The Work That Still Drives Him
When asked what belief continues to drive his work, Raimund’s answer is simple:
“It is necessary.”
For him, education is one of the strongest ways to create opportunity where opportunities have historically been limited.
Volunt2Thai is built around the idea that sustainable change cannot be created by outsiders arriving with all the answers. Projects are developed alongside local schools, families, teachers, village councils, and other community partners.
Volunteers become part of that exchange too.
They may arrive ready to teach, contribute, or share a skill, but they also learn from the people around them. Children meet people from countries and cultures they may never have encountered before. Volunteers experience everyday life in Northeast Thailand while building genuine relationships with the people around them.
That idea is summed up in the philosophy Raimund wants people to remember:
Learning together. Growing together. Building the future together.
More than a decade after Volunt2Thai began, the project continues to connect people across cultures while supporting long-term education and community development in Northeast Thailand.
What started with one man paying attention to a problem has become a community built around doing something about it.
